Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth, was formed in 92, and draws its name from Tolkien's Mount Doom, an author famous for creating the Lord of the Ring books. Amon Amarth is known for lyrics centered on Viking mythology, they prefer the term melodic death metal over "Viking metal." The band includes Olavi Mikkonen, Johan Hegg, Ted Lundström, Johan Söderberg, and Jocke Wallgren. As of 2024, the metal band has released 12 studio albums, with "Twilight of the Thunder God" marking their breakthrough in 2008.
Amon Amarth was formed in 92, and by 96, they signed with their first record label and released "Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds." Two years later, they joined another label, releasing "Once Sent from the Golden Hall," which boosted their international fame. While they were touring, they also released albums like "The Avenger" in 99 and "The Crusher" in 2001. "Versus The World" came out in 2002, followed by "Fate of Norns" in 2004 and "With Oden on Our Side" in 2006. The album "Twilight of the Thunder God" was a hit, and reached high chart positions in many countries.
After that, Amon Amarth toured North America in 2008 and 2009, winning "Best Breakthrough Act" at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards. Two years later, they released "Surtur Rising" and toured globally. They performed at major festivals like Wacken and Hellfest. In 2013, they released "Deceiver of the Gods," featuring themes of Ragnarök. In 2015, Amon Amarth parted ways with drummer Fredrik Andersson and released "Jomsviking" in 2016, with Tobias Gustafsson as session drummer. They performed intimate shows and toured with Megadeth.
Jocke Wallgren became their full-time drummer in September 2016. By 2017, they planned their next album, and Johan Hegg joined Gimme Radio. In 2019, they released "Berserker" and toured with Slayer. They released singles like "Raven's Flight" and "Crack the Sky." In 2022, Amon Amarth announced their 12th album, "The Great Heathen Army," featuring the band on the cover for the first time since their debut. They released a music video for "Get in the Ring" with wrestler Erick Redbeard. The album came out in August 2022. They toured Europe with Machine Head on the Vikings and Lionhearts Tour and headlined the Great Heathen Tour in North America, supported by Carcass, Obituary, and Cattle Decapitation.
