From the poor beginnings in Bahia to the undisputed pop queen of Brazil, Ivete Sangalo's is a life that is more fairy tale than Brazilian reality. She paid her dues playing gigs in local bars before getting her big break in 1993, being signed up by Sony Music to lead Banda Eva. Their live album was their best-seller with over a million copies sold and setting the pace for the future.

Soaring solo in 1999, Sangalo not only carried on the success - she amplified it. Singles like "Festa" were not just hits - they were cultural phenomena. "Sorte Grande" (its fan nickname being "Poeira") was not just a party anthem - it became a stadium song, even appearing on the soundtrack of FIFA 2005. Her live album in 2004 at MTV, which featured that track, went diamond and was the best-selling music DVD in the history of Brazil.

The 2006 show at Maracanã proved she was on the same level as global megastars such as Paul McCartney and Madonna who had previously performed there. The resulting DVD went on to sell 555k copies and become Universal Records' highest-selling music DVD globally for 2007. By 2010, when she reached Madison Square Garden with co-headliners such as Nelly Furtado and Seu Jorge, she was receiving up to $1 million per one-off shows.

It isn't necessarily the richness of her contralto voice that distinguishes Sangalo - it's equally her entrepreneurial and adaptability. She's turned carnival "blocos" and Riachuelo clothing lines into an empire, topping it off with luxury endorsements. When she debuted "Pode Entrar" in 2009, she did so on home turf, recording a comfortable setting that showcased another side of her talent. She has also moved across genres, from rock to axé, and shared a stage with the likes of Shakira and Dave Matthews Band.

Her influence still expands. In 2016, British artist Calum Scott called her the "Brazilian Beyoncé," and The Guardian called her "the most influential woman in Brazil." With 20 million records sold, four Latin Grammys, and chart success up through 2024 with "Macetando", she's proved durability. But most importantly, she's stuck to her Bahian roots as she's become an international representative of Brazilian culture.
