James Arthur is an English singer and songwriter. He was born on March 2, 1988 in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom. Arthur started recording his songs at age 15. He sang in four different small-time alt and progressive rock or indie pop bands. These were: "Moonlight Drive", "Cue the Drama", "Save Arcade", and "Emerald Skye". In 2011, he started to upload his solo work to the website Soundcloud. He also formed a band around himself called “The James Arthur Project”, alternatively called “The James Arthur Band”. They released 2 EP’s (Extended Plays) together.

In 2012, he traveled to Newcastle to audition for the 9th of the British version of The X Factor. He made it to the live show, and despite having an anxiety attack after his second performance there, he ended up winning the competition. In the final, he sang “Feeling Good” from the 1964 musical “The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd” as his free choice. As his “winner’s single”, Arthur released a cover of Barbadian singer Shontelle’s 2010 hit “Impossible” after the show ended. It reached the top of the charts in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He also got into some controversy for using the homophobic slur “queer” in a diss track he made against freestyle rapper Worthless who attacked him. However, he managed to squish the controversy with an apology.

James Arthur’s self-titled debut album, “James Arthur”, came out in November 2013, published by Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Music. It became a hit, peaking at the #2 spot on the OCC chart in the UK. After his second studio album came out, he went on a nationwide James Arthur concert tour called the "Back from the Edge Tour". Since then, he has released 3 more studio albums, thus he has 4 in total. The best selling one among them is “Back From the Edge” from October 2016, which sold around 500,000 copies. Meanwhile, the latest new James Arthur album is titled “It'll All Make Sense in the End”, which came out in November 2021.
