Lady A Biography

In 2006, three Nashville musicians get together, take a few photos in historic Southern mansions, and dub themselves Lady Antebellum. Little does Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood know they would eventually become country music royalty-although it wouldn't be all gravy.

These three clicked from word go. With Scott's powerhouse vocals-she got her chops from her country-singer mom Linda DavisKelley's soulful sound and Haywood's multi-instrumental magic, they promptly caught Nashville's ear. The big break first came in 2007 with Jim Brickman's "Never Alone," but it was their very own hits which really got that rolling.

Well, talk about catching fire: 2009's smash "Need You Now" didn't only top the country charts but also crossed over to become a pop sensation. It earned them a handful of Grammys, too, to again show the world that country music speaks to any heart. They kept the hits coming through the 2010s, from "Just a Kiss" and "Downtown," putting them in an accumulation of many awards and sales surmounting over 12 million singles.

But it wasn't until 2020 that they were confronted with their most towering challenge: when the band shortened its name to Lady A, a well-intentioned but ultimately ill-informed thrust into controversy, blues singer Anita White had used that name for decades. It's that kind of wake-up call you get, which sends you poring over history and privilege.

Ups and downs, the band keeps working their way out. After helping Charles Kelley get through some tough times-their 2022 tour was postponed while he focused on sobriety-they're back to making music together, and from induction into the Grand Ole Opry in 2021 to the latest tunes, Lady A keeps proving great harmonies and honest songwriting never go out of style.
