Keith Lionel Urbahn, better known by his stage name Keith Urban, is an Australian-American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was born on October 26, 1967 in Whangarei, New Zealand. While Urban was born in New Zealand, he moved to Australia with his family at age two. At age 4, he started to play the ukulele, and by age 6, he learnt to play the guitar. He also started to enter local talent search competitions as a child. At age 16, he got on the talent show “New Faces”, airing on Nine Network in Australia.
Urban’s choice of genre was country music. Still in his teens, he regularly appeared on TV shows such as the "Reg Lindsay Country Homestead TV Program" or "Mike McClellan's Music Program", while performing Keith Urban concert shows at the Northern Suburbs Country Music Club in Bald Hills.
His self-titled debut album, “Keith Urban”, came out in September 1991 through the British record label EMI. It managed to gain somewhat of a traction commercially, peaking at the #98 spot on the ARIA chart in Australia. Still, his first nationwide Keith Urban concert tour was as a backup singer for fellow Aussie country musician Slim Dusty.
In 1992, he made the big leap to move to the country music hub of the world, Nashville, Tennessee in the United States. There, he wrote music for other artists, such as Toby Keith and 4 Runner, and also played the guitar on Garth Brook’s 1998 album “Double Live”.
Urban released a second self-titled album, sometimes referred to as “Keith Urban II” for clarity, in October 1999 through Capitol Nashville. It became a moderate success, peaking at the #17 spot on Billboard’s Country Music chart, while also reaching the #145 spot on the overall Billboard 200 chart in the US.
Since then, the Aussie country star has released 9 more studio albums, thus he has 11 in total. The best selling one among them is “Be Here” from September 2004, which sold over 4 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Keith Urban album came out in September 2020, with the title “The Speed of Now Part 1”.
Keith Urban’s biggest hits to date are “You'll Think of Me” (2002), “Somebody Like You” (also 2002), “Blue Ain’t Your Color” (2016), and “The Fighter” (also 2016) featuring Carrie Underwood. He was also a coach on the Australian version of The Voice, and a judge on American Idol from season 12 to season 15.
