Born in Long Island, NYC, Laura Pergolizzi, also known as LP, is a pop rock singer born in 1981 to Italian-American parents. LP adopted this stage name after moving to New York City. LP has released seven albums and three EPs, and has written songs for various artists including Cher, Rihanna, and Christina Aguilera.
LP identifies as a lesbian and highlighted in a 2016 interview that while proving herself as a lesbian isn't crucial, visibility remains important. LP emphasized that LGBTQ+ individuals are ordinary people just like everyone else.
LP's career began with notable collaborations, such as featuring on the band Cracker's album in 1998 and releasing their debut album, "Heart-Shaped Scar," in 2001. Even though this first album got a lot of positive reviews, the pop rock artist's second album of 2004, "Suburban Sprawl & Alcohol," did not achieve positive reviews from the critics.
In 2006, LP signed to a record label part of Universal Music Group, but departed due to "creative reasons" and a year later, signed a new deal. This new record label retained the songs LP wrote before. Between these songs, "Love Will Keep You Up All Night," co-written with Billy Mann, appeared on the Backstreet Boys' album "Unbreakable" later that year.
LP's song "Wasted" from their album "Suburban Sprawl & Alcohol" became the theme for the TV series "South of Nowhere" on MTV's The N. Their track "Damage Is Done" featured on MTV's "The Hills" and was released on iTunes in late 2009.
In 2012, LP was highlighted as Vogue magazine's Artist of the Week. Over the next two years, LP collaborated with notable figures such as Billy Steinberg, Isabella "Machine" Summers (from Florence and the Machine), and others on their album.
Fast forward to 2022, LP collaborated on the track "Line It Up" with Palaye Royale for their album "Fever Dream." Then two years later, in 2024, LP posted a video on Instagram wearing a Russian hoodie, mentioning it was a gift from their Russian fans. This led to the cancellation of their scheduled concert in Kaunas, Lithuania, as a result of the controversy surrounding the gesture.
