Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, also known by his stage name, Macklemore, is a rapper born in Seattle. Macklemore began his career in 2000 and gained popularity and international fame together with the DJ and producer Ryan Lewis as the duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, achieving hits like "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us." Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' debut album earned four Grammy Awards.
After parting ways with the producer, Macklemore released solo work, which brought even more popularity and recognition to the rapper. Macklemore was raised in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. With Irish heritage and a Catholic upbringing, he discovered hip hop at age six through Digital Underground. By 15, he was writing lyrics, influenced by East Coast underground hip-hop artists like Nas and Wu-Tang Clan. He engaged with youth through music workshops in the "Gateways for Incarcerated Youth" program. Macklemore attended Garfield and Nathan Hale High Schools, where he adopted the stage name "Professor Macklemore" and formed the hip-hop group Elevated Elements.
He briefly attended the College of Santa Fe, then returned to Seattle, later earning a degree from Evergreen State College in 2009. In 2000, Macklemore released his mixtape "Open Your Eyes" as Professor Macklemore. Dropping "Professor," he released his debut album "The Language of My World" in 2005, featuring the single "Love Song." He met Ryan Lewis in 2006, who initially worked as his photographer. Their collaboration as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis began in 2009, releasing "The VS. EP" and singles like "Irish Celebration."
They gained attention with "Otherside," addressing substance abuse, and performed at major events like the Mariners Opening Day. Their singles "Wings" and "Can't Hold Us" led to a successful tour and appearances at major festivals in the United States. In 2016, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released their album "This Unruly Mess I've Made," featuring the single "White Privilege II." That year, Macklemore also released solo tracks "Drug Dealer," addressing addiction, and "Wednesday Morning," reflecting on the U.S. political climate post-election. In 2017, Macklemore announced a hiatus from the duo and released his solo album "Gemini," featuring singles like "Glorious" with Skylar Grey and "Good Old Days" with Kesha. He performed "Same Love" at the NRL Grand Final in Australia, amidst a national debate on same-sex marriage. Macklemore then co-headlined "The Adventures of Kesha and Macklemore" tour in 2018.
Macklemore released "Next Year" featuring Windser in October 2021, marking a reunion with Ryan Lewis. In 2022, he released several singles: "Chant" with Tones and I, "Maniac" featuring Windser, "Faithful" with NLE Choppa, and "Heroes" featuring DJ Premier. His third solo album, "Ben," came out in March 2023. In May 2024, he released "Hind's Hall," a protest song supporting pro-Palestinian protests, with proceeds going to UNRWA.
Macklemore is urging people to take part in a “National Shutdown” protest against ICE by skipping work, school and shopping on Friday to oppose recent ICE actions and federal immigration enforcement.
