Kesha Rose Sebert, better known by her stage mononym Kesha, formerly stylized as Ke$ha, is an American singer and songwriter. She was born on March 1, 1987 in Los Angeles, California. Kesha was raised by a single mother in LA, who was also a singer-songwriter, having written songs for such artists as Joe Sun and Dolly Parton. Despite that, they often had financial troubles. The family moved to Nashville, Tennessee. There, Kesha played the trumpet and the saxophone in her school’s marching band, but had trouble fitting in with the other kids. She also often accompanied her mom to recording sessions in the studio.
She started writing songs with her mother as a teenager. Her mom would often present Kesha’s work to people she know from the music industry. Kesha ended up convincing producer David Gamson to make her song “Stephen”. However, this wasn’t the thing that gave Kesha her first exposure to a large audience - interestingly, it was a reality TV show. She and her mom applied to be featured on the FOX show “The Simple Life”, in which eccentric families would house celebrities Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Kesha’s demo tapes, along with the exposure she got from the TV show, were enough to land her a contract with Kemosabe Records.
In the next few years, Kesha appeared in the music video for Katy Perry’s 2008 hit single “I Kissed a Girl” and sang backing vocals for pop star Britney Spears. Her debut album came out in January 2010, with the title “Animal”. It became a massive hit, topping the famous Billboard 200 chart upon its release. The standout track on the record was “Tik Tok”. As a result, she got to go on her first international Kesha concert tour, the “Get Sleazy Tour”.
Since then, the Californian pop star has released 3 more albums, thus she has 4 in total. The best selling one has remained her first one, “Animal” from 2010, which sold 1.5 million copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Kesha album came out in January 2020, with the title “High Road”. In 2014, she made headlines in the news for suing famous music producer Dr. Luke for sexual abuse, a series of cases that are still ongoing after 8 years.
The biggest hits in the Kesha setlist to date are the aforementioned “Tik Tok” (2010), “Take It Off” (also 2010), and “Die Young” (2012). She was also featured on the 2013 hit single by Pitbull, “Timber”. Check where the next Kesha concert is playing near you on our page above.
