Mariza Biography
Renowned within the Portuguese fado music community, Mariza, originally from Mozambique, is a singer who moved to Lisbon at an early age and grew up in the neighborhoods of Mouraria and Alfama. Mariza started by singing gospel and jazz music, but Mariza decided to focus more on fado music to attract more fans from Portugal. As of 2024, Mariza has sold over a million records and is considered a very important figure in the genre.
In 99, Mariza was invited to perform at the tribute for the fado pioneer Amália Rodrigues. Quickly after that, in 2001, she debuted with the album "Fado em Mim." The album is considered to be very remarkable for the genre and produced a few hits. In 2002, Mariza sang the Portuguese national anthem at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
By 2003, the Fado singer released her second album, named "Fado Curvo." Mariza then performed with Sting at the 2004 Athens Olympics. One year later, with her huge popularity not only in Portugal but all over the world, she won an EBBA Award, recognizing her international success with her debut album. By 2005, Mariza's third album, "Transparente," came out.
Mariza's 2007 album "Concerto em Lisboa" and her 2008 album "Terra" both received Latin Grammy nominations for Best Folk Album. In 2011, Mariza worked on a campaign with Roberta de Sá and Paulo Flores for TAP Portugal.
