Peter Gabriel Biography

Picture a schoolboy at Charterhouse showering his audience with flower petals - that's how Peter Gabriel started his journey to rock stardom. Born into a well-connected Surrey family in 1950, he chose The Beatles over singing lessons at age 12 (probably the best money he never spent). His Genesis years were pure theater - the fox head, the bat wings, the wild costumes that had audiences wondering what he'd wear next. But by 1975, after pouring his heart into "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" while dealing with his daughter's difficult birth, he'd had enough. He handed the mic to drummer Phil Collins and stepped into the unknown.

Then came 1986's "So" - talk about revenge of the art rocker! "Sledgehammer" not only topped the US charts (knocking out Genesis's "Invisible Touch," of all things) but its groundbreaking video swept the MTV Awards like a hurricane. Not bad for a guy who started out throwing flower petals at school shows. But Gabriel's story isn't just about hit records. He's been a tireless champion of world music, launching the WOMAD festival and Real World Records. He's fought apartheid, co-founded human rights organizations like Witness and The Elders, and basically proved that rock stars can change more than just the charts.

By 2002, Peter Gabriel was working on his tenth studio album, "I/O," which is a project that Peter started back in 95. Despite plans to release it shortly after "Up," the album was delayed due to touring and also some other personal reasons, including a hiatus for his wife's illness. Peter later resumed work, also working with other artists like Manu Katché and Tony Levin. Fast forward to 2022, he announced "I/O The Tour" and confirmed the album's title. Singles were released monthly in 2023.

From those early Genesis days to becoming a two-time Rock Hall of Famer, Peter proved to the world that true artists never stop evolving. Whether he's crafting personal albums like "Us" about family struggles or scoring Scorsese films, he's always pushing boundaries - and maybe still sprinkling a few metaphorical flower petals along the way. Some of Peter's collaborations include singing on soundtracks like "Babe: Pig in the City" and working with Arcade Fire on their 2022 album. His very innovative approach and business mentality with partnerships have cemented his status as a pioneering figure in music.
