Roger Waters Biography

George Roger Waters is a British singer, songwriter, and music producer. He was born on September 6, 1943 in Great Bookham, England. Waters grew up in a family with a coal miner father and school teacher mother, both of whom were devout left-wing activists. His father was killed during World War II.

He met his future Pink Floyd bandmates Nick Mason and Richard Wright while studying architecture in college. As they slowly lost interest in their studies, they shifted their attention to music. In 1963, they formed a band called “Sigma 6”, which then got renamed to “Meggadeaths”, in which Waters played the rhythm guitar. By 1965, after some changes in the line-up, this band became the now world-famous Pink Floyd. Waters switched his role to the bassist in the meantime.

They released their debut album, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”, in August 1967, with Syd Barrett being the lead vocalist. It became a hit, peaking at the #6 spot on the OCC charts in the UK, and even getting on the famous Billboard 200 chart at the #131 spot over in the US.

After the debut album’s success, Barrett departed from the band due to mental health problems. Thereafter, Waters shared the lead vocalist role with guitarist David Gilmour and keyboardist Nick Wright, while Waters also being the primary songwriter and lyricist.

Co-founder Roger Waters was a member of the legendary alt rock band Pink Floyd until 1985. After a bitter fight and legal battle with his old bandmates, he ended up making amends and rejoined the band for a single Roger Waters concert with Pink Floyd in 2005. They have produced 12 studio albums together, the best selling of which has been “The Dark Side of the Moon” from March 1973, which sold a whopping 25 million copies worldwide. That means it's one of the best selling albums of all time.

The biggest Pink Floyd hits to date are “Money” (1973), “Wish You Were Here” (1975, same title as their album), “Comfortably Numb” (1979), and “Another Brick in the Wall” (also 1979). They also produced the 1982 animated/live action movie musical “Pink Floyd - The Wall”.

Since his departure from the band, Waters took time to develop a career as a solo artist as well. He put out 4 studio albums so far., the latest new Roger Waters album being "Is This the Life We Really Want?" from June 2017 His biggest hits to date are “Pigs” (1977), and “Watching TV” (1992). He also regularly performs live Roger Waters concert shows as a solo artist.
