Weezer Biography

Formed in the city of Fallen Angels, Los Angeles, Weezer, formally known as Goat Punishment, is an alternative rock band formed in the early 90s. Over the group's career, they have sold over 35 million albums worldwide. Their debut "Blue Album" in 1994 was multiplatinum. Even with this success, their second album "Pinkerton" initially failed but later gained cult status. After a hiatus, they released "Green Album" in 2001.

The beginning of the band was really interesting, Rivers Cuomo moved to Los Angeles from Connecticut in 1989 with his metal band. After the band disbanded, Cuomo met drummer Patrick Wilson and bassist Matt Sharp. They tried alternative rock for the band. After trying a few names, they eventually settled on Weezer in 1992, inspired by Cuomo's childhood nickname. They recorded demos and caught the attention of Geffen Records, signing in June 1993 after releasing The Kitchen Tape demo, which included future hits like "Say It Ain't So."

Released in 94, known as the "Blue Album", it mixed brought some power pop influences. Some songs from the album became MTV hits and garnered awards. The album's success included multi-platinum sales in the US and Canada, and it remains highly regarded, ranked by Rolling Stone among the greatest albums of all time.

After completing a tour in 97, the band members decided to go on hiatus. Patrick and Brian pursued side projects, while Matt Sharp left the band due to differences. Rivers returned to Harvard, focusing on songwriting and forming a new band in Boston with other musicians. Eventually, Wilson joined Cuomo in Homie, another side project that recorded an album but only released one song, "American Girls," for the 1998 film Meet The Deedles.

Weezer reunited in early 2000 for the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, which sparked renewed productivity. They rehearsed and demoed new songs in LA, returning to live shows under the name Goat Punishment. They began work on their third album, called "Green Album."

After "Make Believe," Weezer took a break once again. During this time, Wilson and Bell appeared in "Factory Girl" and contributed a cover of "Heroin" for the film.

Throughout their very successful career, the group went through some polemics as well. In the early 2000s, Weezer had conflicts with their label, Interscope, leading to a temporary shutdown of their download page. Former bassist Matt Sharp sued the band before the release and settled out of court.

In 2009, Weezer toured with Blink-182, featuring Josh Freese on drums temporarily while Pat Wilson switched to guitar to give Cuomo more freedom onstage. Freese, a fan of the band, eagerly joined.
