Held in Hellendoorn, Netherlands, Dynamo Open Air is a heavy metal music festival well-known in Europe. Dynamo Open Air started in Eindhoven to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Dynamo rock club, growing from 5k to 118k attendees in 1995, the largest multi-day open-air festival in the Netherlands. Due to infrastructure issues, it was capped at 60k visitors in 1996. The festival struggled with venues, moving to Mierlo in 1999 and Goffertpark in Nijmegen in 2000, reduced to a one-day event after years of being a two-or three-day festival.
An interesting fact is that in 1995, Nailbomb's performance at Dynamo was recorded and released as "Proud to Commit Commercial Suicide" by Roadrunner Records. In 2005, live footage was released on DVD as "Live at Dynamo." In 1998, death metal legend Death recorded footage of their performance, which was released in 2001 by Nuclear Blast as "Live In Eindhoven" to help fund Chuck Schuldiner's cancer treatment.
Over the years, even with all the activities the event offers, Dynamo Open Air featured major bands like Anthrax in the 2005 edition, Dimmu Borgir and Slayer in 2004, and Metallica in 1999.
