Akon Biography

Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, better known by his stage mononym Akon, is an American singer, music producer, and entrepreneur. He was born on April 16, 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri. Akon was born into a Senegalese immigrant family of Muslim faith. Both his parents were performers: his mother was a dancer, while his father was a drummer. Growing up, he spent a lot of time back in Senegal. He also learnt to play a number of instruments as a child, including the drums and the guitar. By the time he was a teenager, his family left him and his brother on their own in New Jersey so they could finish high school. Interestingly, while he has claimed that he has spent 3 years in prison for being in auto theft ring in his youth, there is no conviction on his criminal records.

In his early 20’s, rapper Lil Zane introduced him to Upfront Entertainment president Devyne Stephens. Impressed with his talent, he decided to mentor the up-and-coming R&B singer, eventually signing him with his production company. One of the songs they made together, “Lonely”, caught the attention of someone at SRC Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. As a result, they published Akon’s debut album, “Trouble” in June 2004. It became a massive hit, peaking at #18 on the Billboard 200 chart in the US, while topping the OCC chart over in the UK. The standout track of the record, the aforementioned “Lonely”, reached #4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart.

Since then, Akon has released 4 more studio albums, thus he has 5 in total. The best selling one among them is “Konvicted” from November 2006, which sold over 7 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Akon album came out in October 2019, titled “Akonda”. He is also a very sought-after featured artist, having collaborated on over 300 songs by other artists as a vocalist over his career.

The biggest hits in the Akon setlist to date are “Lonely” (2004), “Smack That” (2006), “Don’t Matter” (also 2006), and “Right Now (Na Na Na)” (2008). He was also featured on the 2011 hit single by French EDM DJ David Guetta “Play Hard”, along with Ne-Yo. In 2018, Akon announced he’s working with the Senegalese government to build a tourist city in the African country named “Akon City”, the project is not yet finished.
