Gandhi Alimasi Djuna, also known as Maître Gims, or simply Gims, is a rapper and producer known for his solo career. Gims began his solo journey in 2013, debuting with the album "Subliminal," which included global hits like "J'me tire." Gims released multiple albums many of which received positive reviews and included major hits, such as "La même." Gims was also considered the most-performed artist in France in 2018. Throughout his very successful journey, Gims also collaborated with heavy-weight artists like Sia, Pitbull, and Sting.
Gims was born in 86, in Kinshasa, Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His family was already involved in the music industry, his dad was a singer in Papa Wemba's Viva La Musica troupe, but they decided to move to France in the late 80s. Gims had a tough childhood in France as he and his family were undocumented immigrants. Despite their struggles, they were all involved in music and were very talented and hard-working. Gims grew up in Paris and a fun fact is that he adopted the name Gims inspired by Asian cinema and martial arts.
In 2002, Gims decided to found the trio Prototype 3015 with JR O Crom and Makan, which later became part of the Sexion d'Assaut collective. The group released the mixtape "La Terre du Milieu" in 2006, 4 years after their debut, and the album "Le Renouveau" in 2007. Gims started to gain popularity in the underground rap scene of Paris, participating in freestyle competitions in the city. The Sexion d'Assaut collective was extremely successful and sold hundreds of thousands of copies throughout their career.
In 2013, Gims decided to go solo and released his first solo album. The album was also successful and sold over a million copies. After the Sexion d'Assaut tour ended in September, Gims planned a break to focus on family. By 2016, Gims released the album "Mon cœur avait raison" which sold over 700k copies. The rapper then performed at the 2016 Coupe de la Ligue final, where he was booed by the crowd. Gims attributed the negative feedback to the audience's support for the opposing team.
In 2020, he announced a new album called "Le fléau," and performed with Sexion d'Assaut in Paris in 2021. That same year, a Netflix documentary came out, named "Gims: On the Record," the documentary brought highlights of Gims' career as an artist. By early 2024, the rapper released "Loco" with Lossa, which went platinum, and "Ma douce" with Baby Gang, and on September 2024, EP "Le Nord se souvient" came out.
