James Michael Bay is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was born on September 4, 1990 in Hitchin, United Kingdom. Bay was born into a rather wealthy family with a fashion designer mother and a wine merchant father. He learnt to play the acoustic guitar at age 11 after listening to Eric Clapton's song “Layla”. After graduating from high school, he moved to Brighton to study at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute and also started to perform the earliest versions of a James Bay concert at the city’s open mic nights.
Bay was discovered by an A&R (artist & repertoire) person at Republic Records after a fan uploaded one of his performances to YouTube. He got signed by the American label soon after, and even got to go on his first sold-out nationwide James Bay concert tour by age 24.
His debut album came out in December 2014, with the title folk-rock record titled “Chaos and the Calm”. It became a massive hit, not only topping the OCC chart in his home country of the UK, but also breaking into the famous Billboard 200 chart over in the US, peaking at the #15 spot. It ended up selling over 2.3 million copies worldwide, making it the best selling record in James Bay’s discography.
His second album was “Electric Light”, released in May 2018, while the latest new James Bay album came out in July 2022, with the title “Leap”. The biggest hits in the James Bay setlist to date are “Let It Go” (2014), “Hold Back the River” (also 2014), “If You Ever Want to Be in Love” (2015), and “Us” (2018). He also performed two of Justin Bieber's hit songs, 2015’s “Love Yourself” and “Sorry”, with Justin Bieber himself at the 2016 The BRIT Awards at the O2 Arena in London, UK.
