On June 22, 2022, Lil Tjay found himself in a harrowing situation when he was shot seven times during an attempted robbery in Edgewater, New Jersey. Urgently, he was airlifted to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. Another individual, 22-year-old Antoine Boyd, a friend of Lil Tjay, was also a victim of the incident and sustained one gunshot wound but was reported to be in stable condition.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, the assailant, who was also struck by gunfire, managed to escape with assistance from an unidentified accomplice. The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office stated that the shooting did not appear to be a random act, and one victim was upgraded from critical to stable condition, while the other remained in good condition.

In a testament to his resilience, Lil Tjay made a triumphant return to the stage a few months after the harrowing shooting incident. In September 2022, he performed his first concert since the incident at the 2022 Rolling Loud event on September 23 in New York, marking a significant moment in his journey to recovery.
