Darius Rucker Biography

Darius Carlos Rucker is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was born on May 13, 1966 in Charleston, South Carolina. Rucker’s father was in a gospel band called “The Traveling Echoes”, but sadly he was not involved in Rucker’s upbringing, who was raised by his single mother. While he and his many siblings did have financial difficulties growing up, he still remembers his childhood with fondness.

Rucker became one of the founding members of the massively popular rock band Hootie & Blowfish in 1986. He was the lead singer and played the rhythm guitar in the band. Between 1986 and 2008, he put out 5 studio albums with them. In 2008, however, Hootie & Blowfish announced their dismantlement so their frontman Rucker could focus on his solo career.

Rucker had already produced a solo R&B album for Atlantic Records in 2001, however, due to contractual changes, it was never released. His first record as a solo artist that actually hit the shelves was “Back to Then”, released in July 2002. It ended up topping the new artist-specific Heatseakers chart by Billboard, and peaked at the #127 spot on the famous overall Billboard 200 chart. In a surprising move, in September 2008, he put out a country album titled “Learn to Live”. It became a massive hit, selling over 1.2 million copies in the US alone, and reaching the #5 spot on Billboard 200. Its success prompted Rucker to leave HATB.

He put out 5 more solo albums since then - however, none of them was able to replicate the success of “Learn to Live”. The last new Darius Rucker album is from October 2017, called “When Was the Last Time”. In April 2018, Rucker announced a reunion tour with his old rock band Hootie & The Blowfish. The band has been touring together since, and even put out a new album in 2019.

The biggest hits in the Darius Rucker setlist as a solo artist to date are ”Alright” (2008), “Wagon Wheel” (2013), and “If I Told You” (2016). Check where the next Darius Rucker concert is playing near you on our page above.
