Lauv Biography

Ari Staprans Leff, better known by his stage name Lauv, is an American singer and songwriter. He was born on August 8, 1994 in San Fransisco, California. While Lauv was born in California, he was living in Pennsylvania with his family when he went to high school. As a child, he learnt to play multiple instruments, namely the piano, the guitar, and the viola. He also took extracurricular songwriting and music production lessons. At age 12, he started to write his own songs.

His love for music turned into an obsession in his teenage years. The young Ari would rarely drink or socialize, spending most of his time producing electronic music. He also performed as a DJ whenever he could - however, the earliest versions of a Lauv concert often took place in an empty club... His biggest influence was the EDM project Owl City. He also started to upload his songs to MySpace under the pseudonym "Somersault Sunday".

He got a degree in music technology from New York University. With his training, he got jobs working behind-the-scenes production in music studios. In the meantime, he released 3 EP's (Extended Plays) under the Somersault Sunday name. In 2014, he released his first single under his new stage name "Lauv". It was an R&B track titled "The Other", which ended up going viral on the audio sharing site Soundcloud. In addition, he co-wrote and co-produced the 2017 house hit "No Promises" by the Cheat Codes featuring Demi Lovato. He also went on a Lauv concert tour as a supporting act in 2017, opening for British pop star Ed Sheeran.

Lauv's debut album came out in March 2020, with the title "How I'm Feeling". It was published by the label AWAL. The record became quite a hit, peaking at the #16 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart. The new Lauv album "All 4 Nothing" was released in August 2022. It failed to emulate the first album's success, only reaching the #82 spot on Billboard this time.

Lauv's biggest hits to date are "Paris in the Rain" (2017), "i'm so tired" (2019) featuring Troye Sivan, "Mean It" (also 2019) featuring LANY, and "I Like Me Better" (2020). He was also featured on the 2019 hit song by the K-pop group BTS, "Make It Right".
